Day 234 - 236 - Cinco De Mayo Weekend- 5/4/-5/6/2012

At the US Embassies across the world, along with the posting of those in the Foreign Service, there are Marines that are posted.  These posts are very selective. The Marines are in their country post for under a year, but more than 8 months, and then they move to their next posting.  The Marines in Skopje live on the grounds of the Embassy. For Cinco De Mayo the Marines planned a house party. These parties are open for all Embassy staff and their invited guests.  I was invited to attend and gladly accepted!  It was a wonderful evening. The Marines had the place decked out... they ordered decorations including Mexican flags and got food from the base located in Kosovo. The food included tortilla chips, Pace salsa, and con queso dip.  Other embassy staff also brought bean dips to share.  There was a live band playing cover hits of American music as well. We had a wonderful evening!

The next day was the actual Cinco De Mayo so Erin and I went had ate some yummy Mexican food at the only Mexican restaurant in Skopje. We ordered nachos to share and then burritos with the intention of taking them home for left overs.... our plan was correct but the face of the waiter was pretty priceless when both asked for our untouched burritos to-go!
After our yummy nachos!
Later in the afternoon the wonderful sunshine went behind some rain clouds. It was a beautiful rain, the kind where the sun is still shining, and it is pouring. Its the kind of rain that produces rainbows!!! It was not too bright, but I took a picture any way.  It arches near the top of the brick building right of the bright yellow building. You are only seeing about 1/3 of it in the picture.

Sunday we decided to venture out for lunch before I found a bus back to Tetovo.  There is a new restaurant in Skopje called Sushi Co.  They had quite the extensive menu. It is probably best that I don't live in Skopje, because I may go there every day if I did!! Spicy food is not that popular in this country, but I was happily surprised by the wasabi, it had a kick!!

Coming home to Tetovo on Sunday I had the opportunity to have an afternoon out in nature with Adora and Artan, unfortunately Linda was not able to join us she was with family (not unfortunately for her being with her family, just that she can't be in two places at once).  We went out for some food and drinks.  Adora and I had ice tea or as we named it, Lemon Blood Tea... we crushed the lemons into our tea. There was also thumb wrestling that occurred!!  We then went back to SEE-U and played outside in the sun. It was a wonderful Sunday afternoon!!

An old lesson I learned in my youth from an amazing Masonic Youth Organization- That even when the sun is shining brightest the storms of life will come, but after those storms, there is always a rainbow.

  1. You did know that Cinco De Mayo came about because the first shipment of Mayonnaise that was ever sent to Mexico was on the Titanic!!!! And after the ship went down the Mexican people were so devastated that they created a National Holiday to remember the Loss!!!!!!!
