Day 61 - Friday 11/11/11

Happy Veteran’s Day!  Thanks to all of those who have in the past and are currently fighting for the freedom of others.  Your sacrifices don’t go unnoticed or unappreciated!

Big news today- as Fulbrights we have received our Residency cards from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Macedonia!  This means several things.  First, that we now have temporary residency in Macedonia and get a cool ID card to prove it. Second, that we no longer have to register with the police when we come and go from the country.  Finally we can register other people who come to visit us!!  This is great news and takes a lot of stress off me when thinking about leaving the country!

To get our cards we had to meet our contact from the Embassy, Gazmend.  We went for coffee at Delfin in the center.  It was great conversation and company.  From there Gazmend took us for an array of desserts.  This was a place that I had not yet been to. I really like getting to experience new places to go and eat so I have more places to share with people who come to visit!  I took a picture of all of our desserts!  At this point Lizzie and I decided it was a night for a reverse progressive dinner.  We had our coffee, then our dessert, and now we were headed for dinner!  We decided to eat at Tivoli, which is the hotel in town as well as award winning restaurant.   We shared a yummy salad, and then I ordered peppers stuffed with ricotta cheese and covered in ham.  SUPER tasty!!!  At dinner a woman sat down at the table behind us, she too was given a English menu…. She seemed to be interested in what we were saying, so I made some lame comment about the English Language, she then asked us if she could join us for dinner.  We had a great conversation and dinner. She was originally from Munich but had been living in Vienna for many years.  She and her boyfriend were traveling through the region headed to Sarajevo to live. She is an Islamic Art specialist and is traveling to see the mosques throughout the Balkins.  It was a very unique dinner experience and one I won’t soon forget!

Lesson: Be open to new people and situations, they can bring you learning you would have otherwise missed out on!
