Day 125 – Saturday 1/14/12

Kid’s Club and English Club started back up today at the American Corner. It was great to be with the kids again after the break for the holidays. Lizzie was still with me in Tetovo so she joined!

For Kid's Club today we did color words. We started by coloring shapes with color words in the center. The kids then made them into crowns.  It was a lot of fun. This group really helps me fill the void of the kids at Holmes!!
At English Club we observed America's holiday of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We started by watching portions of Dr. King's "I have a dream" speech. I was surprised by how much some of them knew about Martin Luther King Jr. The kids then got to write down dreams that want to reach during their lifetime.  The students each then got to stand up and share with the group what their dream or dreams are for the future.  We then created a human time line of events from Martin Luther King Jr.s life. The students each had one event and then illustrated it.  I was really impressed with this group of kids. Being they are 7-14 years old, some of them have not started English at school, while others only have a couple of years of it.  Several of them knew who Martin Luther King Jr was, some knew what he did, and one even said "Martin Luther King is an American hero."  It was a great activity!

Lesson: The difference that one person makes, can travel across the world.
